How to Make a Moving Budget

Most of us don’t have money freely flowing that we can spend until our heart’s content, so when it’s time to move things can get a bit tight. Having to pinch pennies and weigh the pros and cons of every purchase doesn’t feel very good, but setting a moving budget can help you avoid that.

How do you go about making a moving budget? It’s relatively simple. You’ll need to budget for five separate categories:

  • Moving company expenses
  • Self-moving expenses
  • Vehicle transport expenses
  • Post-move expenses
  • Unexpected expenses

If you’re on a tight budget you may be under the assumption that utilizing a moving company is out of the question – but you’d be surprised. Once you start factoring in all of the costs of moving, it may end up about the same or slightly less to use movers versus moving everything yourself. That’s why it’s important to budget for both.

When you’re budgeting for a moving company, get quotes from multiple establishments. Every organization runs and charges a bit differently, and if your budget is so tight it comes down to a few dollars’ difference between moving companies, you need to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Be sure to factor in all additional costs, like packing materials, furniture assembly or disassembly, and other fees a moving company may charge.

Once you’ve gotten your quotes from multiple moving companies, take a stab at figuring out how much money it will cost you to move yourself. Factor in a moving truck rental if you’ll need one, gas money or vehicle shipping costs, and moving equipment. If you’re going to ask family and friends to help you move, don’t forget to factor in how you’re going to compensate them (free food, a few bucks, etc.). Also consider lost time – moving and packing yourself will take up a lot of time you can’t get back, like weekends, vacation, or personal time. Time is money, and if you’re spending a lot of time moving when you should be spending it on something else it can really cost you.

After determining how much it will be for a moving company and a do it yourself job, you’ve still got some budgeting to do. Budget for all post-move expenses, like rent or mortgage payments, necessary furniture and appliances, and grocery and cleaning supplies. Small things like these can add up quickly, so it’s important to factor them in early so you don’t end up dipping too deeply into your savings.

The last things to consider are unexpected expenses. Unfortunate occurrences often happen in the hustle and bustle of a move, so accounting for some extra cash will help cover those costs in the event they pop up. If your move goes by without so much as a stubbed toe, you can use that money for a nice dinner out, a decorative piece for your new home, or put it directly into your savings account.

Budgeting for your move will help ensure you’ve got yourself covered financially and are in a good place come moving time. If you’ve decided a moving company fits best within your budget and are looking for affordable moving services in Columbus, Ohio, turn to America’s Best.
